De Kelders Private House is a small luxury villa near Gansbaai, Overberg, available for exclusive rental or room-by-room. This beach retreat is a few minutes’ walk from the ocean and beautiful sandy beaches, and close to the Walker Bay nature reserve and offers a tranquil, stylish hideaway amid the spectacular scenery. Driftwood sculptures and stone-working sits by moulded plastic chairs in complete harmony and everything has been devised to create a homely, welcoming atmosphere. The landscaped gardens showcase Overberg’s flora and house the saltwater pool, the perfect tonic to the summer heat. Enjoy reading out in the gardens and wandering the beaches or in season, visit the whales and dolphins that swim nearby. With just 3 rooms, this is the perfect private hideaway for a romantic break or an intimate beach holiday with friends.

Accommodation

There are 3 wonderfully-appointed rooms in De Kelders Private House, each with a contemporary yet homely feel. Room 1 has a queen-size bed, a private verandah looking out to the gardens and direct access to the garden and pool area. The spacious bathroom has a luxurious spa bath. Room 2 has twin beds and an en-suite wet room. The small, light-filled lounge leads out to the private patio garden and guests of this room can enjoy views out to the Gansbaai mountains. Room 3 has a king-size bed and a large sitting area as well as a small study for those who can tear themselves away from the view. Glass panelled doors open out to the patio garden where guests can relax in the South African sun. All rooms have Chrysalis bath products, WiFi and ceiling fans and a flat screen TV with DSTV is available on request.

Activities

Some of the simplest pleasures are the best and the north-facing De Kelders Private House is perfectly placed for spectacular Overberg sunsets and star-gazing with the Milky Way clear in view. Guests can cool off in the saltwater swimming pool and enjoy private use of the landscaped gardens, 10 years in the making. The library is well-stocked with CDs, magazines, videos and books on design, music and food as well as some great fiction. Sandy beaches are just a short walk away, or head out to the mountains to explore before returning for afternoon tea on the terrace. Massages can be arranged in-room, at the pool or in the cool of Platbos Forest.

Whales arrive in the bay between June and December and year-round, eco tours can be arranged at Dyer Island which is home to thousands of African penguins and other species. For the more adventurous, try great white shark cage diving and with kayaking, horse riding, fishing and hiking among the activities on offer – nature lovers and adventurers alike will be spoilt for choice. Golf is available at Arabella Country Estate, about 40 minutes drive from De Kelders and there are tennis courts in nearby Gansbaai. For shopping, the best area is at Hermanus, a lovely coastal town which has a farmer’s market on Saturday mornings and a range of boutiques, antique shops, delis, cafes and restaurants. There are some excellent wine farms and tasting rooms in the area, great for trying and buying wines which can be shipped back home.

Dining

De Kelders Private House prides itself on simple, authentic local cuisine. Try the famous bredie (stew) slow cooked in the Dover oven or have a traditional South African braai prepared over an open fire. Barbeques can also be arranged and this chic retreat also has its own bread oven. The country-style breakfast includes home-baked breads, home-made jams and preserves, fruit juice and crispy bacon.
